A Couple of Fun Tracks for the New Year

New year, and your resolution should be to read more. More specifically, read my blog more. I’ll give you the music that you’ll hear in the club or in the most artsy indie loft in NYC haha. First, I’ve been listening to The Hood Internet for about 2 years and this is one of my favorite songs. They have the ability to mix the grimiest rap with soft, shoe-gazing indie back beats, which is no small feat. They’ll be in the MI soon (Jan 22?) so get your tix through Ticketmaster and enjoy. Go to the hood internet site to download this and all their tracks for free.

Passion Pit vs. Juvenile – Hood Internet by DJShortHand

I love Laidback Luke and had no idea there was this new movement called indie dance, but I have been corrected. I can’t give you the download link for this track, because that would be illegal, but i can suggest that you google “blau zippy” and you will find it.

Done With Tests…New Semester

Torq Xponent all over ya

I’ve got some more time…and more music has come out that’s worthwhile, so that pretty much dictates my actions now.  I have to start writing again.  Maybe, “have” is the wrong word, but I would like to start writing again.  I’ve been heavily focused on electronic music, be it house, trance, progressive house, electro, or anything.  This does not mean I will abandon alternative music.  I have a new Vampire Weekend album to review along with many others.  Stay put.  Oh and expect some mixes from me soon.

New Grand CD tracks for Electronic Fans

Kaskade is featured on this new mixed album of songs titled “Grand CD” with a lot of his older Strobelite Seduction songs being remixed.  Here are a couple songs that should be heard.

Vampire Weekend’s Contra Buzz

The anticipation for the new VW album has almost dragged on too long, starting with “Ottvampireweekend-contra_210xoman” being Picture 1featured on Nick and Nora’s soundtrack and continuing with new songs being played an almost every concert.  Now, new things are popping up over the web in a supposed attempt to virally market “Contra,” the new VW album.

This girl keeps on showing up all over the web, and no one knows who she is.  Unless you visit http://www.ithinkuracontra.com/.  It reveals a link to Vampire Weekend’s site and gives a track list and release date for the new album.  It’s a 10 song LP that is going to be released January 12th, 2009.

With Internet Comes Posts

Coming back to school brings both fun and responsibility. One of these things I excel at, and that would be the “fun” section. It took my house around two weeks to get on the same page with Comcast, but now we’re in the current century with wireless. This has also taken away from my new music listening. I’ve tried to gain ground though by not sleeping.

Some of the new highlights:

  • DeadMau5 – For Lack of a Better Name:

    • The Toronto Native is back from Random Album Title with a compilation of new works as well as retooled classics.  For those who love progressive house, check out “Strobe”
  • Jay Z – Blueprint 3:

    • The “best rapper retired” has released another great album.  I think it’s every rappers dream to be on a Jay Z album, and this has a great list of featured artists.  My favorite song on it is “Empire State of Mind” just because it makes me love the Big Apple more than I already do.
  • Kaskade – Strobelite Seduction:

    • This isn’t really a new album, but just something I’ve been meaning to write about for some time.  At my house in East Lansing, we pretty much have Deadmau5 and Kaskade on repeat.  Kaskade is more of a daytime relaxing house music, and there are very few things I’d rather listen to in a hammock.
  • Calvin Harris – Ready for the Weekend:

    • I envy Calvin Harris so much.  He’s 23 and does anything he wants.  His new album is getting further away from his bizarre, quirky electro of “I Created Disco.”  He started with a House single “I’m Not Alone” and it continued on his album.  The best songs are:

I have a lot to catch up on, but listen to those and have fun.

New From Wolfmother

The boys of Wolfmother are back with some new music. Well, I guess I should say the boy is back seeing as 2/3 of the Wolfmother we all knew and loved is gone. Left is Frontman/Axeman Andrew Stockdale. Andrew has recruited two more musicians to round out the new Wolfmother. I’ll spare you there credentials because they don’t really have any that are worthy. But lets be honest, what made Wolfmother Wolfmother was Andrew. He was the heart and soul of the music. It’s his voice and guitar work that made them unique, not some keyboardist and some drummer.

First up we have Back Around

Let me just say that something strikes me about this song. It’s damn good, but more than that it’s a little familiar sounding. That’s not to say that their previous music was the epitome of unique because it was anything but. However, something seems oddly similar to this song. I can only liken it to non other than Jack White. It’s not the whole song that reminds me of the White Stripes. Actually, it sounds nothing like the White Stripes. It’s just the little talking verse he has in there. That was taken straight from the book of the White Stripes. Non the less, the song fucking rocks.

Finally, we have New Moon Rising

If something struck me as familiar about the last song, then you need to listen to this one. That fucking vocal melody is a straight rip from something but I don’t know what exactly I’m thinking about. Maybe you guys can help me? Putting that aside, this song rocks. It’s better than Back Around in all respects. This song begs to be cranked.

This make me lose a lot of respect for Dizzee Rascal

Dizzee

To steal from Dizzee, this song is “Bonkers.”  It fucking sucks.  There is nothing even slightly redeeming about it.  It’s your typical built for radio/club song.  Now there are times where I can find those songs good, because they might be super cathcy (See Little Boots), but this song is just straight bad…It’s really quite sad.  Dizzee Rascal was the shit.  I listened to him all the time in highschool from 10th grade on.  True Grime.  Now he has started collaborating with the likes of Calvin Harris and that’s all well and good, but as soon as you take Calvin out of the equation, you’re left with shite.
